  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ferguson, R -- Be the Voice of ourselves, otherwise we will be portrayed as a secondary actor! : Tim Cook’s book, The Fight for History is one that all Canadians should read. Cook does a wonderful job of surveying the struggles that Canadians had remembering the ultimate sacrifice of all veterans. Canada does have a proud legacy of our Veterans to be proud of. Unfortunately as Cook relates to the reader, Canadian contributions to the fight against fascism took second seat to the British and Americans for a long time - at least to the journalists and historians of the time. Cook reminds us of the timely success that our Veterans did anchor for all of us to be proud of - Vimy, Sheldt, Dieppe despite the losses, contributions of the army, navy, airforce and merchant navies. All four contributed vastly to the ‘team effort’ at home and abroad. ( Reviewed in Canada on December 6, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Davedge -- The Need for Teaching of Canadian MilitaryHistory : Another outstanding work from Dr. Cook. He details the political battle to properly recognize and remember the sacrifices of our Forces from WWI forward and emphasizes the absolute need not to separate our military history from the politically correct pap taught as history in our schools today. Like it or not he points out that the Canada we enjoy today was founded in the fires of the wars we fought from 1859 forward. A must read for all Canadian history teachers. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from A SCOTT MCMILLAN -- Another Excellent read from Tim Cook : As always Tim Cook's books are interesting, fascinating and full of facts. I have read all of his books and all are excellent reads. Another great book added to my library. He never fails to amaze me and have a hard time pulling myself away from the book. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Colin Garnett -- Yet another fantastic historical work by Tim Cook : This book is yet another excellent piece of work by Canada's premiere military historian of this generation. Cook seamlessly blends ample archival research and robust historiographic analysis with riveting accounts of how Canada's view of the Second World War has changed over time. This book is a must read by any budding military historian, if anything to read a masterclass in making historical analysis as addictive to read as your favourite mystery novel. I could just not put the book down. Tim Cook also never shies away from the hard history, the stories that need to be told and debated. He skillfully breaks down controversies such as the evolving reputations surrounding contentious topics such as the massacre at Dieppe, the capture of Canadians at Hong Kong, the internment of Japanese Canadians, and the intense bomber campaign in Germany. This book is a must for any military historian or budding enthusiast's bookshelf. ( Reviewed in Canada on March 22, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Brian J -- A much needed correction to Canadian history : Very readable history of how politicians and others neglected the huge contributions made by Canada in the second world war. Working through the story of how veterans tended to stay silent about their contributions and others stepped in to tell a distorted story of defeats, with little mention of the great successes. It's painful reading, but the memory of how politicians have in recent years focused on saving money on veterans' pensions and the much needed memorial. You don't have to be a veteran to get angry. This book helps to correct the balance and provide an introduction to forgotten sacrifices. ( Reviewed in Canada on December 6, 2020 )
