• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jim Morrell -- For the Baseball Fan of a Bygone Era : I'm a baseball guy, and I love reading about the game. Leo Durocher is a name from my youth and one of the well-respected names in the game for that era. This book is written intelligently and with great insight into decision making of a manager for given situations. Durocher recaps stories from those days, and especially, he gives genuine insight into the brilliance of the great Branch Rickey. That alone, makes the book worthwhile, but the stories and baseball insights make this an engaging, enjoyable read. I very much enjoyed the book. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2018 )

I had hoped that there would be more about Jackie Robinson, but the book ended after the 1947 season which was Robinson's rookie year and the year Durocher was suspended from managing. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Joshua Mathewson -- Enjoyable read of the Leo Durocher era Brooklyn Dodgers : I hadn't known this book existed because I thought the only book Durocher wrote was "Nice Guys Finish Last". The language less bluer in this book which makes sense since it was written in 1948. Still it is pretty good insight into the pre-Boys of Summer Brooklyn Dodgers. I especially enjoyed Leo's description of the near fatal train wreck and fire he and the team went through in 1945. My biggest gripe with the book was that it really didn't cover the rift created on the team caused by Jackie Robinson's debut. It is well known that Durocher puts the screws to the racist petition started by the Dodger players from the South. I just wish that Leo would have given that more detail but readers would have to wait 25 years for his next book for that. All fans of the Dodgers - especially the Brooklyn Dodgers - should read this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2015 )

I was at an age where I only knew Leo Durocher as a baseball broadcaster on the Saturday Game of the week. Branch Ricky had died when I began to follow the Dodgers. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from B. Mraz -- Straight from the man himself! : A great baseball read about the game, when men played like men. I am a Dodger fan but a baseball fan above all else. I love it when the rules were the rules and replay didn't exist. I loved how the story starts in the middle of his baseball career from retiring ballplayer to manager. If you know something about Durocher, you realize how much he didn't write. I feel like I've learned more about Durocher from others than from this book; perhaps his other autobiography, Nice Guys Finsh Last, is more insightful.
